Begin in Budapest, where the Danube separates the hills of Buda from the broad streets of Pest. After your arrival transfer, gather for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant and meet the travelers who will share the journey through Hungary, Austria, and Czechia.
Explore Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church before seeing Gellért Hill, Parliament, and Heroes’ Square, a monument-lined plaza honoring figures from Hungarian history. Visit Széchenyi Baths in the afternoon, then return to the Danube for an evening dinner cruise, viewing the city from the water.
Follow the Danube Bend, where the river turns through northern Hungary. Visit Esztergom Basilica, the country’s largest cathedral, and continue to Visegrád, known for its hilltop citadel and royal palace. Walk through Szentendre, a town associated with artists and colorful old streets, before a Hungarian restaurant dinner with live music back in Budapest.
Pause in Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital, for an Old Town walk and views from Castle Hill. Continue to Vienna to explore its imperial center around St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the city’s Gothic landmark, and the Hofburg, the former Habsburg residence. The day’s program also introduces the art and gardens of Belvedere Palace.
Visit Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburg rulers’ summer residence, to explore its state rooms and formal gardens. Hear about Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth, known as Sisi, as the rooms introduce the people behind the palace. Keep the afternoon free for more of Vienna at your own pace.
Board a boat in Krems, a town on the Danube, for a journey through the Wachau Valley toward Melk. See the river landscape from the water before visiting Melk Abbey, a Benedictine monastery with a vast Baroque complex. Return to Vienna after a day beyond the capital.
Explore Český Krumlov, a Czech town enclosed by bends of the Vltava River. A local guide leads the walk through its small squares and winding streets toward the castle above town. After time for lunch, continue to Prague, where bridges and a hillside castle frame the next part of the journey.
Explore Prague Castle, including St. Vitus Cathedral, the Gothic church within the royal complex. Cross Charles Bridge into the old city to see the Astronomical Clock on the Old Town Hall. Continue through Prague’s Jewish heritage sites, where synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery preserve another essential part of the city’s history.
Travel to Kutná Hora, whose silver mines helped make it a major town of medieval Bohemia. Visit St. Barbara’s Cathedral, a Gothic church honoring the patron saint of miners, and the Sedlec Ossuary, a chapel containing arrangements of human bones. Together, these sites offer distinct views of the town’s wealth and religious traditions.
Conclude the journey in Prague after breakfast, with a transfer to the airport. The route has connected three capitals through their palaces, churches, rivers, and smaller neighboring towns, from Budapest’s thermal baths and Danube waterfront to Vienna’s imperial rooms and the old streets of Bohemia.
